President Donald Trump recently issued an executive order that seeks to limit to whom the United States Postal Service can send mail-in election ballots across the country. In short, the executive order – if allowed to stand – would prohibit sending a mail-in ballot to anyone not on a voter list now being created by the current Federal administration. As a matter of law, however, State and Local authorities have jurisdiction over election procedures, so the recently issued executive order is an extreme overreach much like many other executive orders issued since January 2025.
Consequently, approximately half the States now pursue litigation to block the executive order. In addition, the American Postal Workers Union and the National Rural Letter Carriers’ Association are combatting the attempt to restrict voting rights at such a critical juncture in the nation’s history. As discussed in prior postings, this is yet another example of unions playing a central role in protecting fundamental rights and the rule of law.
