The new regime continues to pursue radical changes to impose its extremist agenda. The current Federal administration has done everything from deporting young children – including a severely ill cancer patient – who are United States citizens, to eliminating funding for the Public Broadcasting System and National Public Radio, and even to calling for the impeachment of judges who rule against the new regime and arresting a judge evidently for disagreeing with the current Federal administration’s agenda.
Despite the escalating tactics, courts around the country have repeatedly upheld the rule of law. In this context, and as illustrative examples, courts recently have done the following:
- Blocked the reduction of Federal funds to schools that have diversity, equity, and inclusion programs;
- Blocked the conditioning of voting eligibility on proof of citizenship;
- Blocked the mass firing of employees of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and related elimination of that vital law enforcement agency;
- Blocked the warrantless arrest of undocumented individuals;
- Blocked the use of the Alien Enemies Act to deport people; and
- Blocked the withholding of Federal funds from sanctuary cities.
Relatedly, tens of thousands of attorneys across the nation reaffirmed their oath to uphold the United States Constitution and the rule of law more generally as part of National Law Day on May 1, 2025. Also on May 1 – International Workers’ Day – hundreds of thousands around the country publicly protested against the new regime’s policies and for more workplace democracy and fundamental fairness for immigrants. In addition, hundreds of universities and colleges have joined together to counteract the current Federal administration’s attacks against the freedom of thought and the freedom of expression. In sum, the judicial branch, civil society, and the general public are insisting with increasing vigor that the new regime respects civil rights, civil liberties, and constitutional protections.
