The escalating attack against unions and the employees they represent persists. The Federal regime recently and unilaterally terminated the collective bargaining agreements (CBAs) governing approximately 30 Federal agencies, including the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, the United States Environmental Protection Agency, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the United States Department of Agriculture, and the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services. To be clear, these CBAs are legally binding contracts executed after extensive negotiations to establish and maintain employment terms and conditions for thousands of dedicated public servants. In similarly draconian fashion, the current Federal administration is seeking to withhold from universities, school districts, nonprofit organizations, and other community groups hundreds of millions of dollars in monies allocated by Congress as a matter of statute or otherwise guaranteed as a matter of contract. Such unprecedented action not only disrupts the vital missions of these essential institutions, the action also is causing substantial job losses and other adverse consequences for employees across the country.

When unions, individual employees, or other concerned parties have challenged the actions by Federal agencies, they have prevailed against the current Federal administration in 9 cases out of 10. In other words, courts across the nation consistently have ruled that various parts of the agenda being pursued under the Federal regime violate key constitutional and/or statutory provisions. In that context, courts imposed approximately 35 nation-wide injunctions during the first 6 months of the current Federal administration. Most recently, a court issued an injunction to prohibit the termination of CBAs covering employees who work for the Transportation Security Administration around the country.

The resistance to the Federal regime's extremist agenda goes well beyond the numerous successful lawsuits summarized above. On Labor Day, for example, over 1,000 marches and rallies occurred around the country. This is a continuation of mass-protest activities that began in January 2025, and they have expanded in size and scope since then. Organizers of the most recent events include the AFL-CIO, the Working Families Party, and Public Citizen.
